The school’s football program has existed since 1893, while they began play in the Pac 12 in 1962 (it was the Pacific Eight Conference at that time). The Cougars’ list of alumni who played pro football includes Hall of Famers Mel Hein and Turk Edwards, as well as Keith Lincoln, Gail Cogdill, James Hasty, Joe Danelo, Rian Lindell, Drew Bledsoe, Mark Rypien, LaVern Torgeson, Harland Svare and the unforgettable Ryan Leaf.
