Classic Sports Card of The Day

1963 Topps football card of former pro football fullback Amos Marsh, who played 7 seasons in the National Football League with Dallas and Detroit. He was chosen for the NFL’s All Rookie team in 1961. A powerful runner who earned the nicknames “Moose” and “Forward Marsh”, he also returned kicks for the Cowboys, and his 101 yard kickoff return was a franchise record that stood for 29 years. Marsh died in 1992 after suffering a series of strokes caused by diabetes.

1969 Topps football card of former pro football running back Pete Banaszak, a 13 year veteran who played exclusively for the Oakland Raiders in both the AFL and NFL. Nicknamed “Rooster”, he was known as a top short yardage/goal line back with a nose for the end zone. Banaszak helped the Raiders win the Super Bowl in 1976, scoring 2 touchdowns in their win over Minnesota in the game. He was inducted into the National Polish-American Sports Hall of Fame in 1990. Currently a Florida resident, “Rooster” works on the post game radio show these days for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

1980 Topps football card of former pro football running back Calvin Hill, who played 12 seasons in the NFL for 3 teams. The majority of his career was spent in Dallas, where he helped the Cowboys win a Super Bowl and in 1972 became the first player to rush for 1,000 yards for the franchise. He was a four-time All Pro and four-time Pro Bowler for the Cowboys in his 6 years there. His son Grant was a long time basketball star in the NBA. In 2016 Hill received an honorary doctorate degree from his alma mater, Yale University.

1991 ProSet football card of former NFL wide receiver Fred Barnett, who played 8 seasons in the league, mostly with the Philadelphia Eagles. Known for his acrobatic catches, he totaled 32 career touchdowns in his 8 seasons, and was named to the Pro Bowl in 1992. He briefly dabbled in coaching after his playing days ended, serving as tight ends coach for the XFL’s Memphis Maniax in 2001. His cousin Tim Barnett also had a brief career as a receiver in the NFL with Kansas City.

2003 Bowman football card of former college and pro quarterback Ken Dorsey, who played 6 years in the NFL with San Francisco and Cleveland. Despite a stellar college career at Miami that saw him break school passing records and win a national championship in 2001, he spent his entire pro career as a backup. Dorsey’s post-playing days have evolved into a successful 9 year coaching career in Carolina and Buffalo. He is currently the Bills’ offensive coordinator.

1999 Opeechee hockey card of former NHL center Mats Lindgren, who played 9 injury-plagued seasons in the league for 3 franchises. Despite being a high draft choice due to his offensive skills, he never lived up to his potential, with his highest single season goal total being only 13 while playing for Edmonton. He represented Sweden in the 1998 Winter Olympics. His son Mats Jr. was recently drafted by the Buffalo Sabres.

1979 Topps hockey card depicting the top 3 goal scorers of the ’78/79 season. They are all Hall of Famers and include Marcel “Little Beaver” Dionne and 2 former superstars who recently passed away, Mike Bossy and Guy Lafleur. Those 2 were key elements in their respective franchises’ dynasty years. Bossy had 5 consecutive 50 goal seasons during his New York Islanders run of 4 straight Stanley Cups in the early 1980s, and twice had the Cup-winning goal for his team. He also won the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year, was a three-time Lady Byng Trophy winner and was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in the Islanders’ 1982 Cup run. Lafleur had 6 consecutive seasons of 50 goals and 100 points while helping his Montreal Canadiens to 5 Cup titles in the 1970s. He also won the Conn Smythe, in 1977 and was a two-time Hart Trophy recipient as NHL MVP.

From CheckOutMyCards.com, a 1988 Topps football card of a dependable running back who logged 8 seasons in the NFL for the Buffalo Bills, Robb Riddick. He was a backup for most of his career, but his tremendous leaping ability made him a short yardage and goal line weapon for the Bills. He scored 12 touchdowns in that role in 1988, 9 of which were 1 yard jaunts. Riddick’s brother Louis also played in the NFL, has held management positions in the league and worked as an analyst on Monday Night Football.

1979 Topps football card of former pro football running back Terry Miller, who had an abbreviated 4 year career in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills and Seattle Seahawks. Miller was a standout rookie in 1978, rushing for over 1,000 yards, but fell off the NFL radar after losing his job to Joe Cribbs in 1980. His status as the only “Miller” to wear jersey number 40 will end this season as Buffalo’s newly acquired pass rusher, Von Miller, dons that number.

1974 Topps football card of former pro football safety Ken Houston, who played 14 seasons in the AFL and NFL for the Houston Oilers and Washington Redskins. Inducted in 1986, Houston is one of 8 players chosen in the 1967 draft to go into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He was a 12-time Pro Bowler and a member of both the NFL’s 75th and 100th Anniversary All Time teams. After retiring as a player, he spent 9 years in coaching with the Oilers and the University of Houston and is currently a guidance counselor for the Houston School District.
